Character Name: Dustin Henderson
Canon: Stranger Things
Canon Point: Following the events of 4x9: The Piggyback
Age: 14, almost 15 - the events of season four fall just before his birthday ironically
Background: https://strangerthings.fandom.com/wiki/Dustin_Henderson
Arrival Scenario: Solvunn
Suitability:
As a kid that spent formative years during the Cold War running drills under desks with teachers who wouldn’t bother to take a bullet for him, he knows the effect that politics can have on the psyche and the difference between cognitive dissonance and abject apathy. He stays informed not only in the societal element of political issues but also in the historical nature of them. While a lot of his world views follow the lens of a misfit teenager surrounded by willful ignorance he still believes in doing what’s right, not what’s easy, and some of his own persona heroes have led to this personal worldview and non-partisan independent political outlook.
With regard to life within the game at large he’ll be first intellectually curious and then more concerned with the people caught within the maelstrom than the powers that be fighting over what belongs to whom. He’d be most interested in the Singularity and the old gods, exploration, and a cure for the disease in Fomalhaut.
As an individual he’s more than capable of taking care of himself, he lives with an absent-minded single mother and has had to watch out for himself and others in horrifying life-or-death situations more than once. He doesn’t have an unrealistic grasp on how to survive and will take the steps necessary to stay informed and self-sufficient.
Powers:
• Genius-Level Intelligence/Wisdom: As the bard, Henderson has the wisdom and knowledge to maintain a balance where things can be endured through the indifference of chaos. His knowledge tends to save himself and his friends whenever trouble comes their way, building equipment and finding resources to fight against evil foes.
• Engineering / Technical Skills: He is able to craft many impressive items that successfully worked and proved as the work of a great inventor at such a young age.
• Singing: Another skill of Dustin as the bard is having a good singing voice. As he excellently sang "Never Ending Story" to his girlfriend Suzie over Cerebro.
• Strategist / Charisma: Being well-read and an attentive student only goes so far in the real world and Dustin has shown to be able to put those skills into practical application, using deduction, reasoning, and consistent study work to formulate plans to combat what he and his friends have to go through. While he's not what many would consider "popular," he knows how to speak to people, level with them, and has shown an ability to reason with individuals that would likely not participate in his antics otherwise. Up to and including effortlessly lying to adults, teachers, and other people in roles of leadership and authority.
• Cleidocranial Dysplasia: Individuals with cleidocranial dysplasia usually have underdeveloped or absent collarbones, also called clavicles ("cleido-" in the condition name refers to these bones). As a result, their shoulders are narrow and sloping, can be brought unusually close together in front of the body, and in some cases can be made to meet in the middle of the body.
PERSONALITY QUESTIONS
Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.
Everything changed for Dustin when Will went missing and Eleven ran away from the freaky science lab that abducted her. His views on the world, his party, and his involvement in both. Dustin was fine getting by beforehand as the goofy bard that was a lot smarter than he let on. He was fine with being labeled among Hawkin’s merry gang of “freaks,” but Elle walked in and completely changed the game with it. As one can expect from tears in the fabric of reality, the entire ordeal was a sobering event. An introduction to knowing that he had very little control and in learning where and how to find it when everything else was off the rails.
It also introduced to the complexities of other people, Hopper, Will’s mom and brother, Nancy, and Steve “The Hair,” Harrington. Trauma does different things to different people some for the better and some for worse and change being the only constant was a reality he learned to embrace. He made the most of what he knew, grappled with what he could do and what he was incapable of managing, and found a family in his friends in an uncertain world and unfamiliar terrain.
Facing his fears and going toe to toe with the unknown was the way he broke his teeth and found some courage in the face of his struggles with the shallow expectations he has of himself. Rising above the simple naivete of a middle school preteen to something more well-rounded and reliable.
Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?
While outspoken and heavily motivated toward good Dustin is a neutral party member and leans toward a chaotic-neutral stance by nature. His motivations are usually tasked with asking questions, and subsequently answering them or solving dilemmas himself and his opinions are his own despite what the majority of the party may think. He doesn't sway heavily toward following rules and instead listens to his heart and what he thinks is right at any given moment.
It’s this impartiality that makes him such an asset to the party as well as gives him the ability to look at things from an objective perspective. He considers the projected outcomes before deciding on a plan and doesn’t fly by the seat of his pants often. It’s the thousand-foot approach when he has the time to employ it, when he doesn’t it’s the fastest and most efficient resolution with as few losses as possible, preferably none at all.
In life outside of the danger provided by the rift in time-space that can be found in Hawkins, Dustin is an aficionado of the technical arts and sciences. He thrives on character archetypes like Spiderman / Peter Parker - underdogs bestowed with great gifts trying to do the right thing with them because he can see himself in that. He’s stubborn, and dedicated, but never unflinching and can admit where his failings are and make plans to improve. He’s always searching for knowledge and enjoys learning and traversing into the unknown.
What quality or qualities do they admire most?
When it comes to himself, astute and effervescent, Dustin is one of the few in his group to maintain ties with both logic and his sense of wonder and find balance there-in without any great expense to his sense of self. He is a well-read and dedicated aficionado of science and SyFy culture alike and this plays into a lot of his ideas and interests where it pertains to fighting the strange things happening in Hawkins and helping his friend. His intellectual acumen is unrivaled in his group and Dustin is no stranger to using his wiles and his keen understanding of things to manipulate people into giving him the feedback he's looking for, whether they want to or not.
In their Scooby-Gang he's always the man with a plan, the guy looking for answers, and the one trying to keep it all together while everything's falling apart. Not a lynchpin by choice, but by nature, Dustin is highly intuitive and empathetic and knows how to read the room. He sees the best in others, even when they don't see it themselves, and is never too proud or selfish to admit where he's wrong, especially if it's hurting others around him. Dustin is no stranger to moral high ground and knows the difference between right and wrong, very clearly, even where the wild and outrageous may be concerned as evidenced by his understanding and inclination to diagnose the Upside Down and the things that stem from it as a natural result.
As someone born with and suffering from cleidocranial dysplasia he's also no stranger to being hazed and mistreated and has had to grow up with self-respect and self-trust of his own making. It's not something he lets slow him down at all, and in many respects, this constant driving force within himself has allowed him to be more active and therefore proved his strength against the condition and the resilience he has to not let it bother him or define him.
An avid listener, learner, and participant of all things educational - in any aspect, while he may not always have something to say he is more often than not digesting what's ahead of him with discernable interest and deciding where to go from there. Dustin has no problem asking questions, standing up for what he believes, and doesn't mind telling people when they're wrong even his friends. This has gotten him into trouble before, and that indefatigable need to do whatever possible to protect those he cares for is a motivating factor for all of his interactions with Eleven and with getting to the bottom of everything going on around them when the maw open in Hawkins made his life anything but ordinary. Being able to do all of this and and still be himself is integral to who he is as a person, he is able to keep going because he can see the light when everyone else is consumed by darkness and that kindness and desire to continue onward is as good as his life’s blood when it comes to all the chaos and carnage he’s been witness to.
Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?
His eagerness can be preconceived as hyperactivity and these same habits have been responsible for others discouraging his insight as a natural result. Where he sometimes might lack the ability to bite his tongue on occasion, what leaves his mouth is never a source of regret. His huge passion for his projects and compassion for others plays right into his decision-making and lines his sharp tongue with ready-to-deliver wit.
In moments of quiet, though, he does question himself and where he stands with those close to him. He feels off balance with the world around him, separated from his peers who have moved into more rote and routine undertakings. He’s used to being the odd man out and this is something he’s come to expect but his dalliances with imposter syndrome leave him feeling less than appreciated and the butt of jokes that were never said.
Dedicated and willful even through the terror of the unknown he rolls with the punches and doesn't let the hammer of negativity fall upon his mood until all is said and done. The fact that he is so optimistic is also a weakness, in that it blindsides him when people do play to their own specific interests or remain blatantly discouraging in the face of what they're struggling against.
He is a team player, and a creative and enthusiastic support system for his friends but he's not always able to reroute his personal feelings on things to keep all of them grounded, and in those moments he has to grapple with himself to dedicate the time and energy into staying focused on what matters.
What is their sign, and why?
The Sun: While Dustin could be several of the listed arcana The Sun best suits him for this setting because he is the light in the darkness more than once in his canon. He is a team player who continually motivates the rest of his party, keeps them level, and encourages them to continue onward even when all seems lost. He can be a goofball and overeccentric about his interests but not once has he failed to commit to solving a problem or helping his friends through whatever they’re facing. He keeps on keeping on and has a way of addressing the flaws in logic and announcing where things need to change without targeting anyone in particular or making others feel anything besides capable. He truly believes in the people around him and knows that everyone is capable of being more than who or what they are at face value.
